Color: Tanzanite is renowned for its captivating blue to violet-blue color, often displaying pleochroism, where it exhibits different colors when viewed from different angles. The most prized tanzanites exhibit a vivid, saturated blue hue.
Clarity: Tanzanite typically exhibits good to excellent transparency, with few inclusions. However, some stones may contain minor inclusions or natural growth features.
Hardness: Tanzanite has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively durable for jewelry but more prone to scratching compared to harder gemstones like sapphire or diamond.
Cut: Tanzanite is commonly faceted to maximize its brilliance and color. Popular cuts include oval, cushion, pear-shaped, and emerald-cut. Cabochon cuts are also used for opaque or included specimens.
Origin: Tanzanite is found exclusively in Tanzania, near the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. The gemstone was first discovered in the late 1960s and has since become one of the most sought-after gemstones in the world.
Treatment: Most tanzanites undergo heat treatment to enhance their color and remove unwanted brown or yellow hues. This treatment is standard in the industry and does not affect the gemstone's value when disclosed.
